This eminently desirable Bradnor Road property sits in an idyllic tree-lined cul-de-sac in Fendalton, adjacent to the Wairarapa Stream.
It was designed by Cymon Allfrey Architects to replace a home lost in the 2010/2011
earthquakes and was awarded the 2016 National Residential New Home over 300sqm
Architectural Design Award.
Cymon Allfrey Architects were asked to create a contemporary home that was light and
open, embracing the stream aspect to the north and the existing garden to the east.
The client also had an admiration of mid-century modern architecture.
The home’s design has a gentle sloping roof plane which rests on two dark, horizontal
cedar board masses. Five structural timber portals span the width of the home creating
a grid like exterior. This grid is mostly glazed to allow light through to enforce the
geometry of the low slung roof.
The design is an L shape, planned around the east court. A central corridor bisects the
home creating east and west oriented private quarters. This feature connects the occupants
to the stream view as they navigate through the house.
Judge’s called the design an elegant project. “Set between river and road, the building and landscape intentions are held in a sensitive balance.”
