This philosophy is evident in a recent project designed by Karsten Architecture and constructed by Basham Building right in the heart of Nelson. Here, they subdivided an existing property on a sloping section, maximising the limited space with a cleverly designed 181.7 square meter home. The architect’s vision played a crucial role in transforming a challenging plot into a successful project.
Maintaining access while preserving the existing trees was vital. Basham Building used timber retaining walls and a fully insulated foundation to achieve this, allowing the new home to seamlessly integrate with the established greenery.
The client’s desire for a warm, healthy home aligned perfectly with Basham Building’s values. High-quality insulation, thermally broken windows and doors, and a mechanical ventilation system, all based on Passivhaus principles, ensured exceptional energy efficiency.
The exterior is clad in beautiful, durable recycled hardwood timber, while the interior showcases an abundance of natural light thanks to strategically placed windows and skylights. Chemical-free paint and the talents of local craftsmen who crafted the joinery, tiled bathrooms, and extensive timber flooring round out this stunning home.
