NZIA Award Winning Farmhouse Design

A new era of farmhouse design

Reinventors of New Zealand’s design landscape, First Light Studio, based in Wellington, has recently been announced as the 2024 NZIA Nelson/Marlborough Architecture award winner in housing.

The home design that won them the award, labelled ‘Two Gabels’, is located in Wakefield and is a simple and elegant farmhouse intended for suburban living.

The home emphasises environmentally friendly living and has high-performance/Passivehaus design elements, all contained within 150mm twinskin walls, including airtightness membranes, mechanical ventilation, thermally broken windows, and solar design.

The link to the outside is a major design element that satisfies the newly retired homeowners’ passion for gardening and the natural world.

It accomplishes this by opening the inside to the outside through a designated mudroom accessed from both sides of the dual-sided entry located between the garage and laundry.

The design aims to cherish a sense of community by fostering relationships with nearby homes, many of which are owned by family members. It aspires to simplicity and elegance while blending in perfectly with its rural yet residential environment.
