Award-Winning Orthodontics Clinic Design
A Breath of Fresh Air
Designed by Redbox Architects, the 2024 NZIA award-winning Nelson Orthodontics clinic in Richmond, New Zealand, stands out for its expertise in creating confident smiles and its innovative design that prioritises patient experience, community connection, and environmental responsibility.
Outgrowing their central Nelson location, Nelson Orthodontics sought to expand their reach to serve the growing Richmond population. The new clinic’s address on a prominent corner site with frontage on a major road offered the perfect opportunity. Being close to five schools was a major perk, significantly reducing travel time for younger patients, who make up a large part of their clientele.
The design brief emphasised functionality and cutting-edge technology but with a welcoming and open atmosphere. An open floor plan facilitates the flow of patients for shorter appointments, with private consultation rooms available for more in-depth sessions. The vision extended beyond the clinic’s immediate needs; the possibility of accommodating additional healthcare providers in the future solidified the building as a valuable community facility.
Respectful of the surrounding residential area, Redbox Architects opted for a two-level building with a unique perforated screen facing the street. This screen wasn’t just for aesthetics – it showcased a bespoke artwork by Maori artist Robin Slow, titled “Haumanu,” which translates to “restore to health, or rejuvenate.” The artwork depicts birds, symbolising the connection between physical and spiritual well-being, reflecting the clinic’s mission. The screen also provides filtered light and pocket views for those inside.
Moving inside, their goal was to create a space that defied the typical sterile medical environment. Pops of colour and warm oak-look flooring contribute to a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere for both staff and patients.
Sustainability was a big focus for the project. The use of cycle stands and electric car chargers encourages eco-friendly transportation choices. A substantial solar panel system on the roof helps offset electricity usage, while durable, low-maintenance materials like aluminium cladding minimises environmental impact. The building even has a living green wall that filters air and regulates internal temperatures, further contributing to a healthy environment.
The collaboration with Kumanu landscape architects ensured a seamless integration of the building with the public space. Low plantings soften the building’s lines, while paved areas and seating create an inviting exterior space.
Redbox has proudly used the Nelson Orthodontics clinic to demonstrate thoughtful design that prioritises patient experience, creates a sense of community, and treads lightly on the environment. This innovative space sets a new standard for healthcare facilities, creating a win-win situation for patients, staff, and the environment.
