NZIA award The Look

Parsonson Architects, based in Wellington, has just recently been crowned the NZIA’s Nelson/Marlborough Architecture Award winner for 2024 for their build ‘The Lookout’.

Establishing the company in 1987, current director Gerald Parsonson says, “We are delighted to have recognition from our peers for this unique project.

The house delicately rests on a pair of sturdy columns, creating a dramatic entrance upon arrival. Designed as a protective shell, it features a weathered steel rain screen over its painted cladding, with large openings that frame breathtaking panoramic views.

The generous overhangs and louvred screens provide shade and protection from the sun, wind, and rain, adapting to the changing seasons.

Access to the house is via a stairway from the driveway below. The rectangular layout positions the bedrooms to the south and the living areas to the north.

Perched high above the sea, the house offers stunning views of the mountains to the west, hills to the south, and Tasman Bay to the east.

Embedded into the site, the house utilises exposed concrete blocks for retaining and bracing walls, contrasting with the delicate Douglas fir posts and beams in the main living space, which is clad in Okoume plywood.

At the top of the stairs, the hallway leading to the bedrooms is designed as a vibrant colour box, with reds and oranges reflecting the hues of the spotted gum floors.

Gerald says, “We have pushed the boat out a bit with this material selection and use of colour, and it was great to have others appreciate this.”
