Established in 2012 by Pam and Jason Gardiner, Jason Gardiner Builders has quickly risen to become a highly respected and award-winning building company in the Nelson region.

One such build that faced COVID restrictions stands out from the rest. Sitting among the established greenery of central Nelson is a unique architectural gem. Lovingly named Park House due to the nature in which it responds to Fairfield Park, this masterpiece was designed by Irving Smith Architects and brought to life by Jason Gardiner Builders.

The original two-story villa, clad in white timber, stood proudly on a gentle rise overlooking generous gardens on both sides. The owners, who had raised their family in the villa, were ready to downsize but didn’t want to leave the stunning location.

The clever solution was to build a new house directly in front of the existing villa, bordering the northern boundary.  To create the new building site, engineered ground stabilisation work was required prior to significant excavations into the hillside below the existing home, for new retaining walls and foundations.  

The final product is a design that strikes a perfect balance. A modern, engineered home that coexists harmoniously with the established villa, a testament to thoughtful architecture and expert construction.

Upon arrival, a streamlined entry guides visitors past the ground floor to the lift or stairs leading to the next level.  As you ascend, a picture-perfect view unfolds a framed panorama of mature trees in Fairfield Park.

Inside, acoustic panels were incorporated into the social spaces and along the main stairs to dampen noise from the nearby road. The living area flows seamlessly from a slightly raised kitchen, creating a layered effect accentuated by internal framing that visually defines different sections within the open-plan layout.

The main bedroom upstairs offers a private sanctuary with its own large deck. A discreet passageway provides privacy and can be sealed off when entertaining. Two guest bedrooms complete the downstairs floor plan.
