PROFILE 2:
AUBREY
Overlooking Albert Town and Lake Hāwea, this expansive home is wrapped around a gully, brimming with kānuka trees, a natural element that Bryce says defines the home’s identity. Rosenfeld Kidson vertical cedar clads the home and serves as a soft accent inside that welcomes nature in.

Hugh and the homeowner worked closely together and have been friends since their junior rugby days. The bespoke concrete stairwell and indoor pool and gymnasium space, required flawless execution. “A house this size and scale, with the complexity of it, does involve forward thinking and problem solving along the way,” says Hugh. For designer Bryce, the rapport between the client and builder meant it was one of the most enjoyable projects to work on.

PROFILE 2:

KANUKA
This family home celebrates the enchanting canopy of surrounding kānuka trees, at the foot of Mt Iron. Bryce says: “The family love every minute in this home. The doors are left open from dawn till dusk in summer so their young children can come and go from the canopy surrounds to the sheltered canopy the home creates.”

The northwest patio and outdoor fire provide a relaxing space for entertaining, with the refined steel pergola floating above similar to that of the light kānuka canopy.

This cedar, steel and concrete home is one of the first projects Bryce and Hugh worked on together. Hugh says: “I’ve built a good relationship with Bryce over many years and we work well together.

Bryce says: “We can talk things through without losing sight of the bigger picture. For clients, that alignment feels like one cohesive team rather than separate consultant and contractor.

PROFILE 3:
KERERU

Designed by Bryce for Hugh and his family this home brings the outdoors in with meticulous attention to detail, striking clean lines and light. Hugh told Bryce to “push the boat out” on the design resulting in a challenging and rewarding build that showcases both Bryce’s design expertise and Hugh’s commitment to detail.

The open layout of the interior offers easy living with effortlessly thoughtful design. Cream tones and natural wood textures combine to achieve a serene and organic feel.

Bryce says: “Threefold and Bagley Construction have worked together on a number of projects now, so there’s a real ease to the way we move from design into construction. We understand how each other thinks, how we communicate and what’s important on both sides of the table.”

“We realise this is the biggest investment in most people’s lives and with that can bring stress,” says Hugh. “So, we pride ourselves in making the process as stress free as possible.

PROFILE 4:
NORTHBURN

This recently completed Wānaka home mirrors its’ alpine setting, with three gables reflecting the nearby mountain peaks. Colorsteel Maxxam in Flaxpod wraps both the roof and walls, balanced with Rosenfeld Kidson Truwood finished in Wood-X oil in Buscot.

When it comes to working alongside Hugh and his team, Bryce says: “By the time a project heads to site, there’s already a shared language. We know the level of detailing they like to see, they understand our design intent and there’s mutual respect around project and budget realities. It means conversations are straightforward and solutions-focused rather than reactive. That familiarity also builds trust. If something unexpected comes up on site, which inevitably happens, there’s no friction.”

PROFILE 5:
RIVERSLEA

Maximising the breathtaking northern views across Lake Wānaka, this elevated location on the edge of a terrace provides vistas of Mt Maude, Mt Gold, Dublin Bay and Grandview Range. The home is designed for hosting large family gatherings and entertaining. Key features include a bar area, a cosy living nook for the kids and window seats.

The home fits seamlessly into the Wānaka vernacular. Bryce says: “Waking up in the main bedroom with the views in the background and the pool in the foreground is one of the highlights for
the client.”

Hugh, enjoyed building this pavilion formed home. “The large 1400 square metre Northlake section is an epic location and view. The interior finishes required a high level of detail.” The entertaining extends outdoors with an in-ground pool, concrete fireplace, multiple seating zones, louvres and an outdoor kitchen.
